Hello World! My name is Bryan Berry and this is my space to blog about my eclectic interests. Expect random thoughts about secular humanism, neuroscience, software develoment, open-source, linux, international development, and using IT in Education. My expertise is limited but I am never short of strong opinions. If one of my rants offends you, please take it with a grain of salt.

I currently work as the CTO for OLE Nepal, a small NGO headquartered in Kathmandu Nepal. OLE Nepal is implementing the One Laptop Per Child project in Nepal. Previously, I was a member of the US Foreign Service for 5 years serving at diplomatic missions in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Hong Kong, and Kathmandu.

I have grand plans and low expectations for this blog. Ideally, I would like to start a pocast and screencast series. More likely, I will post occasional ideas here. I will post many of my entries here using weblogger.el. Which lacks much of the prettifying features of wordpress’s web-based interface.

My Latest Interests:

  • Using html5 + Javascript + CSS to create desktop linux applications, particularly for GNOME
  • Linux virtualization with KVM
  • Semantic Web stuff
  • The use of computers in education

My Influences:

  • Richard Dawkins
  • Mark Shuttleworth
  • Ray Kurzweil
  • Dale Blackwell – not famous, just a long-time friend
  • Bill Klein – the best damn diplomat I know

Favorite Books:

  • The Singularity is Near
  • The Age of Spiritual Machines
  • The Selfish Gene
  • The 21st Century Brain
  • Anything by Neal Stephenson
  • Neuromancer
  • Accelerando
  • The Art of UNIX Programming
  • The Rute User Tutorial and Exposition

Favorite Tools:

  • emacs! – for the true techno-fetishist. I don’t yet use it for chat or e-mail but will probably get there this year
  • Orgmode – for the true personal organization fetishist. Honestly, if you are a busy person this tool will make your life much easier.
  • Python
  • Javascript
  • Good old bash
  • gnu screen
  • GNOME – pretty darn happy with it though I have never tried KDE
  • Ubuntu for now, though Intrepid’s instability annoys me
